City Council Members Call For Action Over Juarez Violence

Three El Paso city council members are calling a proposed city resolution a call for action against the mounting violence in Juarez.

City representatives Steve Ortega, Susie Byrd and Beto O’Rourke said the resolution is needed and will renew a focus on combating Juarez violence.

"It basically asks for help, let's do something, you have probably the most dire situation that this region has encountered in the last 100 years and things are pretty silent over here," Ortega said.

The resolution will be introduced at Tuesday’s council meeting. It will acknowledge the problem isn't getting better and also request Mayor John Cook do all he can to get President Barack Obama to come to El Paso.

"Can city council alone solve Mexico's violence? No. That's going to call for a federal effort between the United States federal government and the Mexican federal government coming together for a binational solution,” Ortega said.

The resolution also calls for the city to look at drug consumption and increased pressure on federal officials to grant asylum to those in fear for their lives.

"This community must take action, we can't sit passively by as we watch Juarez fail. And the failure of Juarez is going to be the failure of El Paso," O’Rourke said.

Ortega said it is not only a humanitarian and economic problem, but a safety issue for all El Pasoans.

"The violence and the spillover is already here in El Paso. I don't want to see it escalate," Ortega said.

Public comment is welcome as the resolution is discussed. El Paso’s city council meetings take place at 9 a.m. at City Hall.
