Convention Center Prepares For Bowling Tournament, Assures Safety Of El Paso

The El Paso Convention & Performing Arts Center has been gearing up for the largest tourism event in the city's history, the United States Bowling Congress women's championship.

Workers are transforming 80,000 square feet into an arena with 48 lanes and seating for 750 spectators. 32,000 bowlers are expected to compete in the event.

"We're awfully excited," said Bill Blaziek, general manager of the convention center. "We're kind of in a big hurry to get the job done before they get here."

The convention center first put in a bid to host the competition four years ago, well before the drug war violence began to surge in Juarez. But last year, concerns began to surface over the safety of hosting the event in El Paso.

"We were very quick to remind USBC and others that are interested in El Paso that we are America's second safest city," said Blaziek. "And there has been virtually no spillover in the city of El Paso."

Blaziek said they've met with several city departments, including El Paso police to make sure the tournament goes smoothly and without problems.

"Of course, the goal is to ensure a very safe environment for the ladies while they're here," said Blaziek.

The event is a huge draw for El Paso, and Blaziek hopes the first of many more to come.

"We measured the economic impact as somewhere between $42 and $48 million," said Blaziek. "And that is first dollar impact."

The convention center will welcome the first bowlers on March 27. The public is encouraged to watch, and admission will be free.
