1 Girl, 7 Cars Hit At Amberwood Apartments In NE

Seven cars and two apartments were damaged after a possible gang-related fight broke out at the Amberwood Apartments in Northeast El Paso.

During the fight, a rock went through an apartment window striking a young girl. She was taken to the hospital and is said to have minor injuries.

"I just saw them run up and down, and that car got almost all the windows broken," said resident Jesus Segundo as he pointed out the damage to a car. "The van right here, they broke the window."

Police responded to the incident, but only detained a 15-year-old boy, who turned rocks on officers.

"They were shouting out gangs but I didn't really hear. I just saw them get the big rocks and just throwing them," Segundo said.

The incident is just the latest violence at the complex. Residents describe the community as one where violence is rampant and gang activity common.

"There's always a cop car up there's always a fire truck, there is always something,” said Nikki Lawton, a resident.

Police said they are doing everything they can.

"Call the police let us get there, let us start the investigation," said Darrel Petry, an El Paso police spokesperson. "The police cannot be everywhere, every day. The residents did exactly what they were supposed to do yesterday evening."

Petry could not provide crime statistics for Amberwood Apartments, but said crime in Northeast El Paso is down 7 percent.

Amberwood's management released this statement: "Amberwood Apartments management is committed to providing responsible management and an enjoyable community in which to live and ensuring that we have the best interest of our residents in mind. We have a zero tolerance policy and appropriate action will be taken against any residents participating in activities that violate that policy."
