New School In Clint ISD To Help With Overcrowding

One of the fastest growing school districts is building a new school to alleviate overcrowding.

Clint Independent School District is not only the fastest growing, it's the largest geographically.

Ricardo Estrada Junior High is still under construction and it will be located about two miles from Horizon Middle School. It will cater eighth and ninth-graders.

The new principal, Robert Mendoza, said this means ninth-graders from Horizon High and eighth-graders from Horizon Middle will go to the new school, giving both schools more breathing room.

The district is currently experiencing a 5 percent growth. Mendoza, who is the current principal at Horizon Middle, said community meetings were held with parents and students as they discussed every scenario, including how the new school would affect sports.

"We came up with a conclusion that it will not affect athletics or ULI activities at all. We will be providing busing, if a student needs to attend activities at the high school after or before school and vice versa here," said Mendoza.

The new school is expected to open by August.
