New App Stops Texting While Driving

Parents, there's new software making it easy for you to control who, when, and where your children can use their cell phones.

"While they're (teen friends) texting we'll kind of take over the wheel," said 16-year-old Margarita Garcia.

Teenagers like Garcia said texting while driving is something they do every day. "I guess it is dangerous, but I don't know, everyone does it," added Garcia.

It seems to be the excuse many teens and even some adults use, but one mom is hoping to put the brakes on that -- after her teen son weaved across the road while trying to answer his cell phone.

"I was badly frightened by the experience and found myself wondering out loud if there wasn't some way to keep him and other teenagers off the phone while they were learning to drive," Darcy Ahl.

That's how Ahl came up with the idea for I-ZUP, a phone-freezing software. It kicks in when you drive more than 5 mph and doesn't turn off for red lights or during traffic snarls.

“I know kids won't like it, teenagers wouldn't like it, I wouldn't like it," said 28-year-old Erica Armendariz of west El Paso. And they don't, because they're unable to make calls or receive and send texts.

"I'll be really mad,” Garcia said. "I'd be like, 'Oh my gosh no."

The program only allows calls to mom and dad or 911. Raymond Armendariz and his daughter Erica love the idea. "I think it should be much more broader than just for students, that's for everyone,” Armendariz said. "I've seen people actually brushing their teeth, going to work and talking at the same time."

"People should just be more cautious and that's a great way to do it," added Erica.

The networks supporting the application are Sprint, T-mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, but not all phones allow you to download it . For more information on this app, click on the links mentioned section.
