EL PASO, Texas -- More drug counselors and parents are finding their kids using unusual products to try to get high. Some are turning to spices like nutmeg and cloves, while others are huffing hand sanitizer. An El Paso mother, who didn’t want to be identified, spoke to KFOX about discovering her 15-year-old son was using household products to get high.“My step daughter discovered this information about him communicating with this girl who was using what the kids call DXM," she said.Dexmethorphan or DXM is an ingredient in cold medicine that can give users a high if abused. Her son’s abuse, however, didn’t stop with DXM. She found instructions on getting high off hand sanitizer her son got from the Internet.KFOX found a number of YouTube videos of people drinking and smoking things many would consider unusual. The videos depicted people smoking and drinking nutmeg right from the spice rack. Nutmeg has a chemical in it called myristicin that in many cases induces a euphoric state. Other videos showed people huffing hand sanitizer and one man smoking banana peels."Some of these ingredients are pretty toxic,” said Eugene Fournoy, an El Paso drug counselor. "It's already in the house, they don't have to go out and pay for it, they don't got to go out and do anything but just go into their food pantry."Fournoy said the Internet is allowing young people to share ideas on how to get high.“Never in a million years did I think my son would be in this predicament because he's always been such a good kid," the mother said. The products, if abused, can be dangerous and possibly deadly.
