State To Warn Parents About Sleeping With Infants

One-hundred-sixty. It's a number that Texas officials want you to think about, because they say it's roughly the number of babies who have died each year in the last two years; babies who were sleeping next to adults.

"No, we never let our kids sleep with us," said Michael Lare of west El Paso.

State officials say when parents sleep in the same bed with their infants, the child may suffocate.

The state department for family and protective services says last year 166 babies died from accidental suffocation, while sharing a bed with an adult. In 2007, the department says there 165 deaths.

In October of 2009, the department said 20 children in Texas died from accidental suffocation while sharing a bed with an adult.

"As a parent, it makes me feel sad for those parents that have lost, you know kids," said Lare.

So to get the word out, the state is about to spend $300,000 to on television and radio announcements to warn parents of the dangers. The theme is "Room to Breathe" and the ads are expected to run sometime in 2010.

Still some parents say they shared a bed with their infants, but they were careful.

"A lot of nights I didn't sleep well just to make sure where she was at, the position and stuff, so yeah it was in our head a lot,” aid Luis Sotomayor of Sunland Park, N.M.

Sotomayor says there is a reason why they kept their infant so close.

"We saw the comfort level, when she would sleep next to us as oppose to in the crib. It just made it easier for us to get some sleep to have her sleep with us," Sotomayor said.
