Ft. Bliss Soldiers Train For War

Each and every day soldiers prepare for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan in El Paso's backyard, and KFOX weekend anchor Daniel Novick got exclusive access to see the training in action.

The company KFOX followed on Thursday deals mostly with finance, but in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 4th Financial Management Company most often go in convoys to do their job.

"We're kind of re-enacting a type of convoy type situation, driving down lanes, possibly encountering IEDs," said Sgt. Dennis McCleod, discussing the training that was about to take place.

And it didn't take long for the first encounter with "insurgents" popping up on both sides of the convoy. Soldiers fire at the dummies with real ammunition, to get a feel for their weapon in action.

Then farther up the road a smoke bomb goes off signifying an IED striking one of the Humvees. The team must pull that Humvee to a safe location, then take an injured soldier inside to a safe landing point for a medical helicopter.

"In case something happens, an IED or an encounter of an insurgent or something like that, then you don't want that to be your first exposure to IEDs or convoy operations," McCleod told KFOX.

Soldiers said Ft. Bliss is such a great location to do this training because the terrain is just like they will find in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We have wind storms just like down range, and the temperatures in the summer time were pretty exact to what we'd encounter down range," said McCleod.

Right now, the troops in the 4th Financial Management Company don't know when they'll be deployed or where, but they are still preparing for that day.
