Theft Hits NMSU Dorms Over Thanksgiving Break

There were some sticky fingers over the Thanksgiving break at a few dorm rooms of New Mexico State University. According to NMSU police, it wasn’t the first instance of theft and probably won’t be the last.

“Every time there's an extended holiday, theft tends to be a problem and that happened over the Thanksgiving holiday,” said NMSU Police Chief Stephen Lopez.

“I think you would have to break into a window to steal something,” said NMSU student Joel Hansen.

However, Lopez said theft occurs a variety of ways including students failing to lock their doors.

“In all of these cases, nothing was broken to get in,” he said.

And any time valuables are stolen from dorm rooms, it's usually the expensive stuff.

“Electronics tend to be the most commonly taken items, things like laptops computers, i-PODs, stereos,” said Lopez.

“I have a fridge, it's a pretty big fridge and I have a little stereo, so I wouldn't want that stuff to get stolen,” said Jennifer Morelos who’s a freshman at NMSU.

“My computer I would obviously take with me and my TV,” said Hansen.

However with the theft occurring over a one-week Thanksgiving break, what about the much longer Christmas break just around the corner?

“Those rooms are going to be vacant for a month and there's just no way we can protect every single dorm room,” said Lopez. “If they've got something that they think somebody might steal, they need to take it with them."

“Now that winter break's coming, no one's going to be here, so I'm going to probably take everything back with me,” said Morelos.
