Fire Destroys Socorro Family's Home Of 20 Years

Fire engulfed a home in the 500 block of Montell in Socorro late Friday night and early Saturday morning, taking firefighters several hours to put out.

Investigators believe the fire may have started near the chimney.

Several people were inside the home when the fire started, including two who were asleep. Neighbors reportedly yelled to warn those inside and everyone made it out of the house safely.

On Saturday, family and friends tried to salvage whatever they could out of the soggy, charred mess.

"We grew up here," said Santiago Chavez, whose parents live in the home. "Actually we built the house. So it's a lot of memories that are tied up in this house."

Some of those memories, including photos collected in the 20 years of living there, could be saved. But the house, and much of everything in it, was a complete loss.

"The family will basically start from zero," said Freddy Martinez, disaster service manager for the American Red Cross. "They need everything from clothing, blankets, kitchen supplies, anything you need to live."

Chavez said he's grateful everything lost can be replaced.

"The good thing is we've got our parents," said Chavez. "They made it out. We're going to rebuild. We built it once, and it's just material things, and that can be taken care of."

The American Red Cross is helping several fire victims in the El Paso area and could really use donations to continue its work. You can call 592-0208 to make a donation.
