Lori Piestewa: Valiant Hero Of The 507th

There's new information about the final moments of the first Native American woman killed in combat.

An Arizona Congressman says Lori Piestewa of the 507th Maintenance Company was not captured and executed during an ambush in Iraq, but died while fighting valiantly.

The Pentagon has yet to issue a final report on exactly what happened to members of the 507th Maintenance Unit during that fatal ambush in Iraq--but we are hearing some new information about the only woman who was killed...

Lori Piestewa shared time with her family in El Paso just before deploying to Iraq--but her final moments on the battlefield have been a mystery -- until now. Piestewa's hometown Congressman Arizona Representative Rick Renzi is revealing that Piestewa was true to her heritage as a Hopi Indian, and fought to the end like a warrior.

He says, " The position that she was within the convoy was a position of honor. She was driving the highest ranking NCO Officer, when ambushed she fought with her weapon and she fought valiantly with courage."

Representative Renzi says early reports that Piestewa was captured and executed are not true. He says he watched the video of her captured and killed comrades, and has talked to Pentagon officials who say Piestewa was never taken into Iraqi custody.

"During the ambush she was in the position where some of the fighting was the fiercest along the column, and she fought with the same ferocity as a front line troop, and that needs to be understood by the people of El Paso, the people of the nation, and the people of my district in Arizona where Lori comes from."

Rep. Renzi says he watched the video that the Iraqis took of the captured and killed members of the 507th several times, and says Piestewa was not shown. He says he expects the Pentagon will be releasing the full report on the ambush soon.
