Federal Sting Nets 13 Major Bloods Gang Members

A federal indictment has led to the arrest of 13 known Bloods gang members operating in the El Paso area.

El Paso police and FBI agents arrested the 13 members in the past 48 hours on charges of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine.

FBI special agent in charge David Cutherbertson said the arrests will effectively disband the Bloods street gang in the city of El Paso.

"This indictment charges essentially the leadership and most of the members of the El Paso clique of the Bloods. So this will essentially dismantle the bloods in the northeast," Cuthberson said.

However, residents in northeast El Paso were not as optimistic.

"It's not going to stop. There's other problems they should deal with, but gangs. You can't stop gangs. You can only slow them down for a while," said Cedric Jackson, a northeast resident.

The arrests and charges come on the heels of a gang-related shooting in Northeast El Paso Monday night.

Officials have not released if the sweep has any connection to the killing, but officials did say they decided to work quickly because of "mounting tension." Officials would not elaborate on what that meant.
