City Vaccinates 3,500 El Pasoans In One Day

The city held its mass H1N1 flu vaccination clinic on Tuesday at the Convention Center, with El Pasoans waiting in long lines with some confusion outside, followed by an organized and timely process inside.

"I've seen a lot of kiddos sick, I'm a school nurse, and I've seen a lot of them, so I wanted to make sure they'd be OK, my family," said Michelle Beebe, from Northeast El Paso.

Beebe and her family of eight were the first in line Tuesday afternoon.

"I hope it works out well, trying to get the appointment was bad, but we got it and we're here and we're first in line, so I'm excited," Beebe told KFOX.

The health department refused to let KFOX or any media outlet shoot any video inside the convention center as the public got their shots sighting health privacy concerns, but they did let KFOX see a run through with city employees.

"I think people should move through from entry to exit in less than five minutes," said El Paso Department of Public Health director Mike Hill.

With 500 people in the first hour, it ended up taking about 20 minutes per person.

"I'm sure the first hour is going to be a little clumsy until everybody gets the idea of how this is done," said Hill at a press conference.

The Beebe family of eight took 29 minutes, but had no complaints.

"When you go to the doctor's office, you end up having to wait in line, you have to make your co-payment, it takes forever filling out the paperwork, here they helped you, you were in and out," said Beebe.

In total on Tuesday, 3,500 people were vaccinated.
