Teenager Shot, Killed In Northeast El Paso Identified

El Paso police said a 19-year-old's death Monday was the city's 12th killing in 2009.

Erique Lewis was shot in the torso. He was taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center, where he died a short time later from his injuries.

Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, a 19-year-old man was at a gathering in the 3900 block of Thomason Avenue with other young people when another group showed up and an argument broke out, said spokesman for EPPD Chris Mears.

Friends gathered near the scene of the shooting after receiving word the teenager killed may be a friend of theirs.

"I heard a real loud gunshot, one hard one,” said Maria Hernandez of northeast El Paso.

"There was some type of verbal altercation that then culminated with a shotgun being fired at least one time," Mears said.

Overnight the police command center set up in front of the home, yellow tape blocked off the road as police canvassed the area and spoke to neighbors and witnesses.

There has been no word on whether police have anyone in custody.
