Jurors will get back to work Tuesday deliberating a sentence for Fabian Hernandez. They spent about four hours Monday trying to agree on a sentence recommendation of either life in prison or the death penalty. On Friday, jurors stayed late to hear testimony in the sentencing phase of the trial. An expert witness showed the jury a family tree indicating widespread alcohol abuse, physical abuse and domestic violence in Hernandez’s background. He said that background has lasting effects, increasing the likelihood of relationship problems and violent tendencies. Hernandez’s mother also took the stand, confirming accounts of abuse in the family and alcoholism. It took jurors three hours last week to find Hernandez guilty of capital murder for the shooting deaths of his wife and her boyfriend. Renee Hernandez and Arturo Fonseco were found shot to death on the side of a road in the Upper Valley in November 2006.
