LC Realtor: Fake Craigslist Advertisements Easy To Come By

Chuck Olson, the owner of Exit Realty Horizons in Las Cruces, said fake listings of homes are posted on Craigslist all the time. He said someone will cut and paste pictures and details of real homes listed for sale and claim they're for rent.

“In our office, we'll see it two or three times a month,” said Olson. “They’re just scamming all of the public.”

KFOX reporter Phil Anaya wanted see if he could find one of those fake listings. Sure enough, found two on Friday. A four-bedroom home in the Sonoma Ranch area was listed for only $900 a month while another four-bedroom home for only $800 a month was listed off of Del Rey Boulevard. The advertisements seemed legitimate, but there is one way you can often tell it's a scam. No phone number, no listing of a property management agency and no way of ever meeting the "so-called" owner.

“You need to be talking to people that you can see in person,” said Olson.

Olson said often times the person will claim they no longer live in the U.S. and consequently can’t meet the interested renter or buyer. He said at that point they hope the individual will fill out a questionnaire with personal information and send a deposit. If you think you've found a fake listing, Olson said there is one thing you can do. Go to the top right corner of the ad and flag it as prohibited.

“Craigslist is vast it's huge and it's hard to police it from our stand point because it can be there today and gone tomorrow,” said Olson.
