Drivers Take Advantage Of Gas Station Price War

The competition is on between three gas stations on one west El Paso corner.

"If they're lower over there, I would probably go over there," said David Corchado.

His attitude is what's fueling the competition at the intersection of Mesa and University. All three gas stations there are vying for business.

"Usually it's $2.60," said Corchado. "And the other day I passed it was like $2.30. It's crazy."

"This morning, Circle K was the same price as 7-Eleven," said Adrian Ontiveros.

But the prices changed by Friday afternoon. The price was $2.69 a gallon at Chevron, $2.53 at Circle K, and 7-Eleven was winning the war at $2.45 a gallon.

"It's kind of weird how they go up and down," said Ivan Esquivel.

The difference in price was enough for some to wait in line at the 7-11 even when the pumps were empty across the street.

Though the price tag was higher at the Chevron station, some drivers felt they were still getting the better deal.

"This one, [the gas] lasts longer than the other ones," said Alejandrina Ortega.

Others were lured by the lower prices across the street, but in the end, decided to stay at the Chevron station.

"Me and my dad were just seeing which is the best deal," said Ontiveros. "And then we saw the huge line, and it's only 10, 15 cents. It's not going to kill us."

For others, choosing between the three simply came down to proximity.

"I'm running out of gas," said Esquivel. "And this is the closest one."
