Program To Honor Veterans During Holidays

The El Paso chapter of Wreaths Across America wants to make sure the veterans are not forgotten this holiday season.

Wreaths Across America is a national program that works to hold simultaneous wreath-laying ceremonies at veterans cemeteries in every state and overseas. The cost to sponsor a wreath is $15, and organizers said it is money well spent.

Debbie Torres is a member of the El Paso area Civil Air Patrol and an organizer for Wreaths Across America. She said, “You get a live wreath that’s balsam. It smells wonderful. They will stay out this year until Jan 16. So, they are up a little more than a month. And they look just as good when we take them off. A little dry but they hold up great”.

The group is looking for supporters to sponsor a wreath for one or more of the nearly 50,000 headstones at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.

On Dec. 11, volunteers will place the wreaths on the graves. A formal ceremony is scheduled on Dec. 12.

Supporters can sponsor the tribute for an unknown veteran, or a loved one dearly missed. “It honors our veterans. And here in El Paso, we’ve made it so people can buy a wreath for someone special. We started that trend and we wanted to make it more personal. So, it is more meaningful for someone”, said Torres.

The wreaths are $15 and you have until Dec.1 to place an order. Call 915-239-6149 to place an order.
