The smoke has cleared on a mobile home fire in Mesilla Park that left a family of five with nothing but the clothes on their back.

Thursday, the Parra family searched through what was left of their home that caught on fire Thursday morning.

Joquin Parra said he was able to find a box with important papers like the birth certificates for his three daughters. He said he also found his wife’s purse, charred but somewhat salvagable.

Dona Ana County fire investigators said they found several space heaters and extension cords in the home.

“Before my wife went to church yesterday, she turned them off,” said Joaquin Parra. “That’s the first thing I asked her, ‘did you turn off the heaters?’ she said ‘yeah’.”

Thursday Dona Ana County officials warned people about the dangers of space heaters.

“The older ones, if they turn over they don’t turn off and they can ignite with any sort of fabric or carpet nearby,” said Jess Williams, a public information officer with Dona Ana County.

Meanwhile, Parra’s phone has been constantly ringing with people who wanted to help the family as they start over.

The Canutillio School District gave clothing. Others have offered furniture and even a place to stay.
