Roads Reopen After Tanker Overturns

Zaragosa Road and Montana Avenue reopened after a propane tanker overturns, forcing authorities to block the roads.

Traffic on Montana was backed up through out the day on Thursday.

"I didn't know it was going to be this long. I've already been here for so long, I might as well wait," said Rosa Villegas from Montana Vista.

Villegas came upon the traffic then realized what was up ahead. Two miles of road in the far east were blocked to traffic because of the danger involved when this tanker over turned.

"It is carrying liquefied petroleum gas and the danger with this fuel is that it's very combustible. Static electricity can set it off," said Lt. Mario Hernandez from the El Paso Fire Department.

At first the plan was to turn it upright with heavy equipment but the tanker was too heavy. It was carrying 80,000 pounds of liquefied petroleum gas. They had to empty some of that out and that took hours.

"I needed to get home to pick up my granddaughter from school," said Villegas.

Villegas was not the only one, dozens of other drivers were wondering if they would gain access by the time school let out. A crew had to transfer some of contents of the tanker to another one in order to remove it from the road. It took six hours. By 3 p.m. some of the roads were open.

"When I got a hold of my relatives they're going to pick them up for me. That's all that mattered," said Villegas.
