Fire Leaves Family Of 5 Without Home

A family of five is left without a place to stay after a fire destroyed their home Wednesday night.

"I know this is something that can happen to anyone,” said Claudia Parra, one of the homeowners.

Parra said she had just left church when she saw a thick cloud of smoke and flames in her neighborhood.

"I got scared. I even said poor people I hope it's nothing big,” Parra said as she held back tears. “But who would've thought it was my house."

The fire ripped through her mobile home on the 1300 block of Missionary Ridge Road in Mesilla Park.

"We walked outside and the trailer was already in flames,” Christina Medina said, one of the neighbors who tried hosing down the flames before emergency crews arrived.

"My neighbor was looking for me because she thought my girls and I were in there, she even had her husband knock down the door," Parra said.

Fortunately Parra and her three daughters, ages 12, 10 and 6 weren't inside. "My girls were crying the little one was telling me, 'mommy what clothes am I going to wear now mommy?’

The fire was so intense it burned a large portion of the home to the ground, it was even smoldering hours after the blaze.

"I had barely moved in here. I moved here in June," Parra said. "I feel really sad because, what am I going to do now?”

Parra told KFOX she’s just thankful her family is safe but knows it's going to be tough getting through the holidays. "I hope people will have the heart to help us, I would really appreciate it."

It’s unknown what sparked the blaze.

Anyone wishing to help the family can send an email to brenda.medina@kfoxtv.com or call the family at 471-8181.
