El Paso Man Gets Second Chance At Life

Thanksgiving is a time many give thanks for a great meal and our families. But one man will be thankful he has life, something he wasn’t sure would happen.

“Every day I wake up and it's like, man I hate going to dialysis, but there's not much I can do,” said Manny Corral.

Three days a week, Corral headed to dialysis long before the sun came up.

“It's like a death sentence, that's the way I feel,” he said. “You're either waiting for a kidney or waiting to die, there's no in between.”

Like thousands of locals, Corral has diabetes. But his got so bad, his kidneys started shutting down. Monday, he got the call: a donor match had been found. Manny was transplanted Tuesday, all because a donor made sure in the event of an accident, their family knew to donate their organs.

“Here's how easy KFOX has made it,” explained Pam Silvestri of the Southwest Transplant Alliance. “You go to kfoxtv.com, you go to the health tab and scroll down to ‘Donate Life.’ Three clicks, 60 seconds, and you are officially a registered donor in the state of Texas and you are a life saver.”

Manny says he now feels healthy and strong, much better than when KFOX spoke with him last spring. It was then he said this about the need to register as a donor, just in case.

“If you get sick, you're in the hospital, they're not going to kill you for your organs,” he said. “You will be helping a lot of people and if you believe in God and you think God rewards good deeds, that's a heck of a good deed to do, and you will be rewarded for that.”

KFOX is a proud supporter of the "Donate Life" campaign. We encourage you to check out our documentary on organ donation, and also register as a potential donor. Just click under the health tab at the top of this page.
