Family: UMC Let Our Son Die Alone, Never Contacted Us

The Guerra family of the Lower Valley gathered Wednesday remembering their brother and son, Enrique “Henry” Guerra.

“He was a very happy giving person," said Rebecca Guerra, Henry’s sister.

But with their feelings of loss, came feelings of anger.

"[It is] ridiculous, inhumane, unfair," said Margarita Davis, Henry’s sister.

The Guerra family said Henry suffered from diabetes and was apparently taken to University Medical Center by paramedics this past Friday. They said despite Henry being a usual patient at UMC, the hospital notified them.

“He was there Friday night, he was there Saturday, he was there Sunday, and he was there Monday,” Davis said.

The Guerra family said they had no idea Henry was in the hospital until a neighbor told the Guerra family on Monday they had seen an ambulance leaving on Friday.

The family said they went straight to UMC, but hospital staff told them repeatedly that Henry was not in their hospital.

Eventually the family went by a nearby fire station, where crews confirmed that Henry was indeed taken to UMC.

The family decided to go back, and again they were told no one by his name was there. They were asked to leave the hospital, they said.

In the car, the family decided to call the hospital again.

“My sister pleaded with [the operator] to please check the records because she knew my brother was there,” Davis said.

That is when she was told Henry was dead.

Margaret Althoff-Olivas, a UMC spokeswoman, issued this statement to KFOX:

"I would like to apologize to Mr. Guerra's family for this very unfortunate situation and offer my condolences on the loss of their loved one. UMC is in the process of investigating what caused this breakdown in communication. Once we have determined what happened and why, we will meet with the family to share our findings."

But Henry’s mother Maria Guerra said she will have to deal with the fact that she never got to say goodbye.

"I'll miss him a lot, I'll be thinking of him all the time,” said Maria Guerra.
