Controversy Surrounds Second Ethics Commission Meeting

The El Paso County Ethics Commission held its second meeting with yet more controversy.

The controversy deals with the roll the county attorney's office plays in the ethics commission.

The newly appointed county attorney, Jo Anne Bernal, said it is their job to represent the ethics commission. In fact, the county attorney represents every commission and entity in the county.

However, a number of people spoke at the commission on Wednesday, including local lawyers, and said the commission needs to be completely independent from the county, including the county attorney's office.

"The attorney general's office has addressed it, and has said, 'There is no legal conflict of interest.' And has said, 'Not only should we, but we must provide legal advice," said Bernal.

"What we have is 15 years of stink down here. And so, in order to get rid of the stink, we need to get rid of the stinkers," said Theresa Caballero, a local attorney.

In the other big news with the ethics commission, the chair of the commission, Stuart Leeds, has sued a local blogger for defamation.

In the lawsuit, it said blogger David Karlsruher aka David K comment's in a recent entry were false and made with malice, meant to injure the reputation of the chairman.

In the blog entry, David K said Leeds is hurrying the committee so that he can start a witch hunt before election season, and likened him to a character in the Salem witch trials.
