El Paso Sun Bowl Competition Qualifiers Told They Didn't Win After All

Four children qualified to go to Dallas when they competed in the Sun Bowl Punt, Pass and Kick. But when the city officials reviewed the scores, it turned out there was a mistake in entering the scores and the wrong children were told they won.

"When I told her we were going, it was like she was four and we told her we were gonna take her to Disneyland. It was the same reaction," said Felipe Sano.

Sano said it was heartbreaking when he had to tell his 11-year-old daughter, Adrienne Holguin that she didn't qualify to go see the Dallas Cowboys play after all.

"She broke out in tears and I took her for some ice cream and tried to talk to her," said Sano.

"I can't say it enough to the families, we're sorry about the inconvenience that this has brought to the families," said Paula Powell with the city's Park and Recreation Department.

Powell said when they noticed the discrepancies on the scores they notified the NFL that three families who originally won didn't qualify after all.

"We want to preserve the integrity of the city and of the program and continue our El Paso kick in the future. We have to watch that all of our results are honest and truthful so that the right kids go," said Powell.

Sano said he reminded his daughter about good sportsmanship and he says she understands.

"She practiced so hard. It made me want to cry," said Sano.

Powell said they're making changes to their score cards so this incident doesn't happen again.
