Fort Bliss Looking For Public's Comments On Growth

Unlike video games there is no restart button in real life so for soldiers on the home front it's critical they receive the best training possible.

“The most important thing to concern ourselves with is the training aspect,” said Colonel Leonard Wells who is the Deputy Garrison Commander for Transformation at Fort Bliss. “And with training you have to put soldiers in the field.”

And because of the desert terrain throughout west Texas and southern New Mexico, Fort Bliss will be looking to expand training and take it to the next level utilizing over 1 million acres of land. Tuesday there was a meeting in Las Cruces for Fort Bliss to welcome and concerns the public may have with the use of that land.

“It's to give the public an opportunity to understand what's going on with the growth and expansion of Fort Bliss and to ask questions,” said Wells.

That's because with the development of training and use of land it will affect airspace, it will bring additional noise to the area, impact socioeconomics, increase transportation and many other factors. But the potential impacts have been researched and has been documented in a environmental impact statement by the Army. While the army is seeking public feedback overall they are confident of the inevitable growth.

“I think it is a win-win overall for everyone,” said Wells.
