MADD Concerned About Holiday Season After Fatal Overnight Crash

An overnight crash that killed four people and sent five others to the hospital is sparking reaction from Mothers Against Drunk Driving or MADD.

Police believe that alcohol was involved in the crash which took place in the 3300 block of Zaragoza.

"It's another tragedy that could have been prevented," said Virginia Gonzalez, executive director of MADD, West Texas affiliate. "These lives did not have to be taken. These families did not have to begin this long road of suffering."

Gonzalez said the message is clear.

"If you drink and drive, you will ultimately end up in a body bag or behind bars. That's the bottom line," she said.

But those who are intoxicated still get behind the wheel. Gonzalez said alcohol is involved in 50-percent of more of fatal car crashes.

"Unfortunately, it's almost as though the community becomes either immune to it or considers it the norm where it's tolerated," said Gonzalez. "It's such a simple thing to do, to be responsible. Either call a cab, call somebody else, or designate a driver."

Otherwise, more lives like those of four young El Pasoans will be lost.

"It's a a scary indicator as to what our holiday season may look like," said Gonzalez.

Throughout the upcoming holiday season, MADD will push their "Tie One On For Safety" campaign. The group encourages people to tie a red ribbon on their vehicles as a promise to drive sober.
