El Paso Veteran Writes Book About PTSD

He spent seven years in the military and for it, Curtis Butler III said he has paid a price. He now suffers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

"The government, they tend to think PTSD is only a military issue, but it's a worldwide issue,” Butler told KFOX. “It's a disease that's taking people out left and right."

But he’s taking his condition and turning it into something else: a story. Butler wrote a series of essays on PTSD for a college class that he took earlier this year. Now, he’s turning them into a book.

"It's a personal/ need-to-know book. It's called 'Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: My Story Please Listen,' Butler said.

The book will hit book shelves Jan. 9, 2010. He has a discussion about Fort Hood and a sample book reading on Nov. 24 at Barnes and Noble in West El Paso.

He said the pages will tell the story of his years in the Army and things that triggered PTSD. He said it all comes out, including the good.

“All my time in the military was not bad. When you read the book you'll see I had a lot of good stuff," he said.

And then there's the bad and the ugly.

"I put my wrongdoings that I did. I put the wrongdoings of other soldiers and the bias and corruption that is going on in the military," Butler said.

All of the writing has kept Butler very busy, but last week like the rest of the nation, his attention turned to the shootings at Fort Hood, where an Army psychiatrist was accused of shooting and killing 13 people and wounding others on post.

"You're a psychiatrist and you're getting all those different stories everyday. No, he might not have had the whole PTSD, but he surely had the S: the stress,” Butler said.

And for the families, he feels sympathy.

“To the families in Fort Hood, you know my condolences and I hope now the VA and everybody wakes up," Butler told KFOX.
