El Pasoans React To Passage Of Health Care Bill

Posted: 7:40 pm MST November 8, 2009Updated: 8:46 pm MST November 8, 2009

Dozens stood outside of the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour Bus on Sunday waiting for free health screenings, and the topic of conversation was the healthcare reform bill.

"I think there are pros and cons," said Hilda Ortiz, from East El Paso.

Ortiz does not have health insurance, yet she feels divided about the bill.

"Everybody thinks, 'Oh this is a great bill,' but then nobody takes into account, some people don't take into account that somebody has to pay for it," Ortiz told KFOX.

She's particularly worried about the fact that under the bill, insurance companies would no longer be able to deny coverage based on preexisting medical conditions.

"The insurances are going to be saturated, the doctors are going to be saturated, because everyone qualifies, then are we going to be cheated after that," she said.

But Ortiz also sees the importance of the bill.

"A lot of people need to be insured, it's really hard, even if you have good jobs, it's very expensive to have insurance," said Ortiz.

If you missed out on the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour Bus on Sunday, there are still a couple of chances to catch it. On Monday from noon to 6 p.m. the bus will be at the Walgreens at 2879 Montana Ave. On Tuesday, it will be at the Walgreens on 10850 North Loop in Socorro, also from noon to 6 p.m.
