Teen Charged In New Mexico Nun Killing

It's a case that is rattling a small town in northwestern New Mexico. A teen is under arrest in connection with the murder of a nun on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.

Authorities said 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz’s body was discovered earlier this week when she did not show up for Sunday Mass. FBI officials said 19-year-old Reehahlio Carroll of Nanajo was charged with the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought.

Navajo nation court records show Carroll was charged Thursday under Navajo law with the unauthorized use of a car that was reported stolen a day earlier. Reservation officers said the car belonged to Bartz.

“I’m sure that the community hasn’t been sleeping well for many nights. I thing with this arrest they’re going to have a better night’s sleep tonight and fell a little safer in their homes,” said Diocese of Gallup spokesman Lee Lamb.

Bartz served at St. Bernard Parish Catholic Church on the Navajo Reservation and belonged to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Parishioners said she had a lot of success converting people through her work. They said she prayed with them in their homes and traveled to the homes of elderly residents on the reservation.

FBI agents did not say the specific cause of death, but a spokesman Darrin Jones said there was no evidence to suggest Bartz was sexually assaulted or targeted because she was a nun or for religious reasons.
