Fort Bliss Takes Extra Precautions In Response To Fort Hood Shootings

Posted: 7:54 pm MST November 6, 2009Updated: 9:04 pm MST November 6, 2009

The massacre at Fort Hood Thursday was still buzzing around Tom Foolerie's tattoo shop Friday.

"Here and there it's talked about," said Maxwell Philpot, who lives on Fort Bliss. "But it's a really bad thing. No one really likes to talk about bad things."

The shop is just across the highway from Fort Bliss and is filled with military patrons.

"I had a lot of friends and family text me saying, 'Oh, what base are you at?' I'm not at Fort Hood, so don't worry about me," said Philpot.

In response to the Fort Hood shooting, Fort Bliss Commanding Gen. Howard Bromberg told KFOX he's increasing random checks and patrols on post, as well as security at large events, and officers are looking within units to review and monitor "high-risk" soldiers.

"What we don't want to do is overreact either," said Bromberg. "And we'll continue to talk about this for the next couple of days as more comes out."

The extra measures are comforting for some.

"I think what they're doing is sufficient," said Lisa Faller, who's husband serves in the military.

Still some believe there is no way to prevent what happened at Fort Hood from ever happening again.

"No matter how much security you put on a place, you really can't pick and choose who's the one who's going to go crazy," said Philpot. "You never know who's going to snap."

Bromberg said since Thursday, he has been in talks with the City of El Paso and has reviewed Fort Bliss' emergency procedure. He said Fort Bliss had practiced its emergency response at least twice in the past year.
