LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- In June, Dona Ana County animal control responded to a house on King Edward Drive where they found over 30 cats. While they all seemed to be domesticated, some of them were cross-breeds of wild cats. Apparently the woman responsible was evicted and moved to the city, but there she allegedly was cited for having two Lynxes. After new reports led Dona Ana County authorities to believe the woman had two more wild cats, they went to her old residency on King Edward Drive. It was there where Animal Control said they found about 10 dead domestic cats in the freezer along with one bobcat in a tree. But neighbors have said there are two bobcats and not just one.“They say that there was a second cat larger than this that actually chased them, they ran and then the cat went another direction,” said Curtis Childress, director for Dona Ana Animal Control.Friday animal control set up traps throughout the home and while there is only one bobcat left on the loose, if not found maybe more could be expected.“Some of the neighbors have even indicated that they believe it even might be pregnant,” said Childress.Animal control does have some advice for residents in the area.“Small dogs you might want to keep them inside,” said Childress. “Always be cautious of your kids.”But one resident who KFOX spoke to wasn’t fazed by the news that there’s a wild cat on the loose.“My dogs are small and run from regular house cats anyway,” said the neighbor who lives directly across from the house where the cats were found.Other surrounding neighbors were a little more concerned Friday.“It concerns me a lot,” said next door neighbor Jan Pharis.“They are mean and I haven't seen one in a long time and I don't want to see one now,” said Joe Ramirez. This problem is not just a burden for animal control and concerned residents, but also the city and county's only real animal shelter.“I personally know of thirty five plus animals that have gone through our shelter from this house hold already,” said Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock who is the Director for the Animal Services Center of Mesilla Valley. “That's a lot of animals just normal domestic animals let alone exotic hybrids.”Animal Control said charges will be filed, but they haven't decided which ones to file. Their top priority is finding that second bobcat.“We're going to set traps were going to monitor the traps, were going to stay available for phone calls if someone says hey I've spotted something, then we'll respond,” said Childress.Childress said if you have small animals and live in Dona Ana County near Kind Edward Drive, it may not be a bad idea to keep them inside, as well as any small children. If you do happen to see the wild cat, whatever you do, don't approach it. Call 911 or Animal Control immediately.
