New Speed Bumps Adding More Danger

Posted: 8:27 pm MST November 3, 2009Updated: 8:37 pm MST November 3, 2009

El Paso City Council took a look at Sunset Road in the Upper Valley during their meeting Tuesday.

In July, they voted to add four speed bumps to the roadway in an effort to slow drivers down.

According to the city, Sunset Road is one of the most dangerous with the most potential for accidents.

But without a curb along the street, adding the speed bumps only instigated the bad driving.

Rep. Beto O’Rourke said, "People were simply driving around the speed cushion into the shoulder of the road, where people walk their dogs or jog or ride their bikes. So it was creating an arguably more dangerous situation than the one that existed before."

Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to get rid of the speed bumps.

Instead they'll have crews re-stripe the roadway to narrow the lanes, which they believe will force people to slow down.

They’re also adding more police patrols in the area to stop those driving over the speed limit.
