The H1N1 flu-related death of a baby has parents rushing to the clinics.

Lea Torres brought her 3-year-old daughter, Bella, to Dr. Jose Prieto's office after noticing flu-like symptoms. The news about the a 7-month-old child from Central El Paso H1N1 influenza-related death has some parents worrying.

"Especially with her being in a daycare with other kids that might be sick, that's been a concern," said Torres.

The El Paso Department of Public Health confirmed nine H1N1 influenza-related deaths in the county. The 7-month-old is the first child case. Prieto said children are more susceptible to the H1N1 virus and even the regular flu because it will be a brand new virus being introduced in their body and they don't have immunity against it.

"I think kids who are having a hard time with it, their immune system is overwhelmed by the infection and they can't handle it, so it seems to progress in those cases pretty quick," said Prieto.

But Prieto says there's no need to panic.

"The most important point is for everyone to stay calm and not panic. I think it's important for everyone to stick to basic principals if your child gets sick," said Prieto.

But some parents like, Lea say it's hard not to worry.

"With any little thing you want to hurry up and get it checked out," said Torres.

The 7-month old's death is the ninth H1N1 influenza-related death in the El Paso county this year compared to zero deaths for the regular flu for all of 2008.
