Las Cruces City Council Seats Up For Grabs

In Las Cruces there are three city council seats up for grabs and the position for a municipal court judge, but that seat is unopposed. The three city council seats that are available will surely play a vital role in Las Cruces' continued growth. There's more than 51,000 eligible voters for Tuesday’s election, but so far the city Clerk said there's only been just over 1,000 absentee votes, so there's really no telling what to expect at the poles, but the clerk did also mention one of the heaviest voting spots Tuesday was in District six and it's that district that is known for its continued growth. The Sonoma Ranch area is something that concerns many residents as they want to be assured the city is ready to grow at the rate it currently is growing at. Incumbent Sharon Thomas said there are already plans in place to make sure that happens.

“We probably have 10 neighborhoods associations so far and we want to get one in each neighborhood and then have a council representative from each one so we can meet with the city and developers,” said Thomas.

Her opponent Jim Harbison said ultimately the city holds the power to monitor growth and he wants to be a part of that process.

“I think the city has some responsibilities in monitoring and making sure everything is according to the rules that they've established and if they do then I think it follows the logical growth trend,” said Harbison.

The other two races are in District 3 between incumbent Dolores Archuleta and Olga Pedroza and District 5 between incumbent Gil Jones and Gill Sorg. Incumbent James Locatelli is running for municipal Judge, but is running unopposed.
