Home Owner: Southwest Escrow Took My Money

Posted: 8:06 pm MST November 2, 2009Updated: 7:19 am MST November 3, 2009

Weeks after a Horizon City escrow company abruptly shut down, a woman came to KFOX Monday claiming Southwest Escrow took off with her payment.

"Everything was fine. We never had problems with our payments,” said Virginia Gamez of Horizon City. "I would pay a lump sum, and it would be divided into the taxes, the insurance and the owner."

However, it was back this summer that Gamez felt something was wrong when she received a notice that her property taxes hadn't been paid. She said Southwest Escrow was responsible.

"I told Southwest Escrow that my taxes weren't being paid, and they let me know, ‘Oh you know what Ms. Gamez, we made a mistake, and we'll be paying your taxes,’" Gamez said.

Now Gamez believes that was a lie. She said she called El Paso property tax office to confirm the payments, but instead they told her she owed more than $1,000.

Gamez then found out her $500 payment from September was never sent to the woman she bought her home from, leaving Gamez wondering if the money will ever turn up.

“What's going to happen, you know? They took my money and so now I'm going to have problems on paying this money," Gamez said.

KFOX has learned that a civil case has been brought against Southwest Escrow. Land Brokers Inc. has requested entry to their abandoned office to look for documentation and payments. KFOX is working to gather more details.
