El Pasoans Get Ready To Vote

EL PASO, Texas -- It's that time again, for Texans to head to the polls to voice their opinion. But you won’t cast a ballot for politicians. Tuesday Texans will vote on 11 proposed amendments to the state constitution.Among the oneS that may interest El Pasoans is Proposition 4, which creates a fund that could help the University of Texas at El Paso become a research school or tier one school. "I think that would be a really good idea, something that UTEP, really needs," said Avery Segapeli, a UTEP student.UTEP could to get millions of dollars for research if the proposition passes.“Yes we need it, because the other school get way more than us," said Selene Gutierrez.So far in El Paso County, election officials said more than 4,000 people have cast their ballot in early voting, which ended Friday. El Paso election officials anticipate 20,000 people will vote in this election although they were hoping for 28,000.Another topic of interest is Proposition 11, which limits the government's ability to take private property for economic development."Well you don't want people to come and get your property, you want to limit it,” said Gutierrez. "We still have a lot of land to work with. Go north. Go east."Proposition 7 calls for an amendment to allow state guard or other state militia or military to hold other civil offices.Proposition 8 would authorize the state to contribute money, property and other resources to establish, maintain and operate veterans hospitals in the state.In San Elizario and Canutillo, voters will also consider a tax rollback.
