EL PASO, Texas -- Animal advocates are outraged to find out a pit bull was left unattended in the county for 10 days even after neighbors called the Sheriff's Office twice for help. Currently, Animal Services is no longer responding to unincorporated areas of the county, instead its a task the Sheriff's Office is doing, but it's still in the process of getting the program online. With the help of some kind hearts at Animal Services and the Humane Society, Danny, the pit bull was picked up from an area in the county. In the next few days he's going to be at the Humane Society possibly available for adoption. But this story raises questions about the lack of animal services out in the county.Danny, who is partially blind was finally picked up from this area in the county near Doniphan and brought to Animal Services on Wednesday. Animal advocate, Rebecca Rojas said neighbors called the Sheriff's Office to pick up the dog but they said they couldn't do anything about it."On the second occasion it was stated that they could just put a bullet in the animal's head and take care of him that way," said Rojas.Sheriff's officials said the deputies never said such thing. Four weeks ago, county commissioners canceled animal services to the county and gave the Sheriff's Office $115,000 to start an Animal Control Unit. The supervisor of the newly created program said they're in the process of hiring, training and equipping personnel to carry out the duties of the Sheriff's Office Animal Control Unit. Right now, they would only respond to calls with aggressive or vicious animals."I fully understand that the Sheriff's Office is in a very difficult position right now because they were dumped this responsibility. I think county commissioners are to blame for this one. Commissioner Escobar stated she didn't feel she was getting her money's worth for services Animal Services was providing," said Rojas.Commissioner Veronica Escobar said she stands by her decision to cut Animal Services from the county areas."We were paying for whenever a citizen called Animal Control, their response was to let the deputies restrain and cage the animal then we'll go," said Escobar.Escobar argues the pit bull was not a threat. She's asking the public to be patient."We have money for the vehicles and the equipment so we just have to buy them. It will only take a couple of more weeks but it will save tax payers huge amounts of money," said Escobar.Rojas argues the longer we keep the county unprotected the higher the risk of issues like dog bites and rabies. The Sheriff's Office is in the process of negotiating contracts with the city of El Paso where services would be needed in cases of urgent circumstances. There is no projected start date at this time.
