Snow Falls In Parts Of Dona Ana County

Shannie Corral and Robert O'Brien both attend New Mexico State University and thought it would be nice to take a hike during one of the rare days Las Cruces is overcast. They were able to find more than just clouds above their heads.

“Who would’ve thought just 10 miles down the road you could drive to see snow,” said Corral. “Yeah it's really cool to see snow, I don't think anyone is going to believe us.”

But some people wouldn't need to believe her because they could see it themselves.

“It's different, you don't see snow in Las Cruces, you know?” said Adrian Slim of Central Las Cruces.

Slim said he works construction on Baylor Canyon Pass and because of the snow he actually got to go home early Wednesday.

“It's like a blizzard, that's why we had to stop working,” he said.

And the elevation seemed to be the real difference, because KFOX found both Corral and Slim only approximately 10 miles east of Las Cruces, but 1,600 feet above the city. About another 100 feet in elevation, on Highway 70, at a scenic overview, KFOX would find more Las Crucens enjoying the white stuff.

“I wanted the girls to see the snow,” said Art Guillen of Central Las Cruces.

Which may have been a good idea since it may be awhile before Guillen’s young granddaughters get to see snow again.

“The last time I remember seeing snow I was like a little girl,” said Corral.
