El Paso City Council authorizes a $630,000 project to improve the Armijo Public Library and Chihuahuita Community Center in South El Paso.

In an 8 to 0 vote, the council agreed on adding a 1,600-square-foot computer lab to the library.

The project also includes setting up 37 new computer workstations in the lab.

It will take two weeks to finalize a contract to break ground.

Alan Shubert, city engineer, said, "It's essentially a value engineering process, it allows us to look at things that may be equal, alternatives that may be cheaper or something that will save taxpayer money."

In addition to the Armijo library expansion, the Chihuahuita Community Center will convert from evaporative cooling to a refrigerated and heated system while they remodel the facility.

Construction on the buildings is expected to start in the next one to two months.
