Crash Kills One On MLK; Commuter Complains Of Road Dangers

Traffic was shut down for hours on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Stan Roberts Road in far Northeast El Paso after a head-on crash claimed the life of one driver.

Initial reports indicate Myra Flores, 25, was driving her Hyundai sedan when she drifted into oncoming traffic. Flores died at the scene.

The other vehicle’s driver, also a 25-year-old woman, was taken to University Medical Center with non-threatening injuries.

UTEP student and White Sands employee Chris Medina takes Martin Luther King almost daily, on his commute, he said he's seen accident after accident

"It's every day sometimes seven days a week going out there, so it is very scary,” Medina said. "Just recently last week, I had to be at work at 2 in the morning and me and another off-duty police officer had to pull over because there was accident."

For such a heavily used road, there are some things missing, Medina said. He complained that there is no median or guard rail, only one lane in each direction and poor lighting.

Almost two years ago to the date, an accident at the same spot killed 53-year old mother Christina Gomez. It was also an early-morning head-on crash.

"I personally would like them to make a secondary road for both sides of the road of the highway going both ways, that way cars could pass if they need to,” Medina said.
