Mother Advocates Organ Donation After Her Son Needs Heart Transplant

Dee Davis-Casso said she remembers how awful it was when she was told how her son Jason was going to die.

“His blood pressure may continue to drop and at that point he's going to have trouble breathing and then we're going to intubate him and then we're going to put him on life-support,” said Davis-Casso.

Jason is currently 30, but his health problems began as a kid with extremely high cholesterol and only got progressively worse since the doctors he saw believed he was too young to have a serious heart issue.

“Oh sure, that's cholesterol, you don't have to worry about that,” said David-Casso. “The doctor says, 'Oh, you're just having a panic attacks.'"

But after having a series of heart attacks that lead a triple bypass, a micro-valve repair and a pacemaker, Jason just can't seem to get better and about a month ago Dee had to listen to this.

“The doctor set us in a room and said he's not going to make it through the weekend,” she said.

Miraculously Jason has made it this far and is now on a waiting list for a heart, but his mother who is now an advocate of organ donation, said it's not just about going to the motor vehicle department and signing up, but rather really communicating with family members that it's your wish to donate. Because in the case of an emergency, if one of them says "no," then a donation cannot occur regardless of being signed up as a donor.

“The way to fix that is to get a living will, or an advance directive stating your wishes, it's a legal document,” said Davis-Casso.

While Jason waits patiently on the organ donation list, he doesn't seem to be the only one with the broken heart.

“Knowing he has to go through all this kind of leaves me heart-broken,” said his younger brother Grant Levron.

Friday David-Casso will be hosting a Halloween benefit party for her son and is welcoming the public. It will take place from 7 p.m. to 12 p.m. and will be at 106 Sitka Deer Street. If you would like more information on becoming an organ donor you can go to www.donatelifenm.org.
