El Paso firefighters were on the scene of a massive fire in Central El Paso on Sunday.

The fire started just before 1:30 p.m. at a warehouse on Grama Street near Frutas Avenue.

When fire crews arrived, the mud brick building was completely engulfed in flames. Shortly after responding the entire roof collapsed.

"The flames were probably 30 feet in the air and the smoke was higher than it is now, probably about 200 feet," said on-looker Gabe Jimenez.

"It's pretty scary," said on-looker Janie Gonzalez.

The blaze left the warehouse gutted, with one of it's walls collapsed. The owner of the warehouse said he had hydraulic equipment among other items inside at the time flames broke out, but no one was inside that he knew.

The fire halted railroad traffic on a nearby track, while El Paso Electric crews were forced to shut down electricity to 50 customers for a few hours.

"It's in an inconvenience for everybody that lost electricity, but it's nice that they got the fire out and it's nice that they're being cautious," said area resident Wilson Barrow.

The official cause of the blaze has not been determined. Officials estimate a total cost of damage at upwards of $150,000.
