LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Ever been on a flight overseas? If so, it can make you realize how vast and big this world really is. For example Los Angeles, Calif., and Tokyo, Japan, are about 5,500 miles apart or a 10 to 11-hour flight. That means most people would need a whole day if not more dedicated to travel.

While Spaceport America and commercial space flight is already mind-boggling enough, experts are already looking toward the future when it comes to global travel.

“You first start with the things that you're doing now, say at the Spaceport America here in Las Cruces and then we would evolve that to a point to point where maybe you're going trans-oceanic,” said John Olds the Chief Executive Officer of Space Works Engineering.

Olds made an announcement Wednesday in Las Cruces at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight, that the idea of super fast point to point travel is not only possible but already being worked on.

“On the order of 10 years or so I would expect to see high-speed, very fast, you know faster than Mach 5 travel between two points on the earth,” said Olds. “Mach-five is a measurement of speed, it's five times the speed of sound so yes, it's pretty fast,” said Olds. Not only will it revolutionize commercial travel, but the mailing industry, too.

“People can travel on those space vehicles, people can ship their cargos on it, you can ship federal express, it could be there same day and in some cases if you shipped it from east to west you could actually get there on the same day you shipped it,” said Olds.
