LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- New Mexico State University police said early Sunday morning Scott Raintree, 19, attacked his dorm room suitemate with a rubber mallet. The victim was knocked unconscious briefly after the first shot to the head but after regaining consciousness was able to escape. Police said Raintree turned himself in and faces charges of aggravated battery and false imprisonment. Initially police had the attacker under the name of Scott Roundtree, but they've since made the correction because his last name is Raintree.According to police not only was the crime very unusual for NMSU, but they also believe it was pre-meditated.“He also stated that he had purchased and acquired that rubber mallet for the purpose of injuring someone with that mallet,” said NMSU police Chief Jaime ChavezChavez said because of the severity and unusual circumstances of this case they are working with law enforcement in Colorado to see if Raintree may be connected to any crimes up there since that is where he’s from.
