EL PASO, Texas -- Back on Sept. 1, it became illegal in the state of Texas to talk or text on your cell phone while driving through a school zone, but right now, it is still legal in all of El Paso County.

Canutillo Elementary School sees a lot of activity as school gets out, and having a distraction like picking up a ringing cell phone and talking could be dangerous.

"You see it a lot. A lot of parents are busy on the phone and the kids are trying to cross the street and they're on the phone," said Maria Cano, from Canutillo.

Cano, who KFOX saw talking while walking, would like to see more parents do what she does -- either walk to school or drop the phone while driving.

"It is dangerous, because a lot of kids do walk home," said Cano.

And soon talking or texting on the phone while driving in a school zone will be illegal outside of the city limits. While the state passed the law back on Sept. 1, it doesn't become effective until signs are posted.

The signs in the county will go up in the next seven to 10 days.

"A lot of people need to see the signs so they can follow the rules," said Cruz Guardian, also from Canutillo.

Guardian, who has a daughter in second grade, is glad to see the county finally putting up the signs.

"I think that's good, they're prepared more than the city," she said.

According to a city of El Paso spokeswoman, the city is still looking to secure the funding needed to put up the signs in school zones.
