Teen Running From Calif. To NY Crosses New Mexico

A teenager running more than 3,000 miles from Palm Springs, Calif., to New York City has made a stop in New Mexico.

Jasmine Jordan, 16, or "Jazzy," warmed up and stretched in Deming on Sunday with about 2,500 miles still to run to New York.

"Some of my friends have said I'm crazy,” said Jordan, of Dalton, Minn.

Jazzy's is running for the Saint Christopher Fund, an organization that helps support truck drivers and their families with the high-cost of unexpected medical expenses.

“A close friend passed away, Sheila Grothe, at the age of 38 from cancer, she didn't have any medical insurance,” said Jordan.

So not only is Jazzy running to support uninsured truckers and their families, but for Sheila.

“I want to end April 17, which is the day Sheila passed away,” she said.

As KFOX reporter Phil Anaya ran a mile with Jazzy, it became clear that one of her biggest challenges is that she runs along interstates, which have hard and uneven pavement.

“I had shin splints for awhile from running on the road, so we went into the median and that was pretty tough,” said Jordan.

“We see a pretty face and $1 million smile, but I see the shin splints, I see the tears, I see the pain in her face and it hurts,” said Jazzy’s father, Lee Jordan.

Regardless of the pain, this teenager from Minnesota pushes along road and is refueled by the supporters who drive past.

“People that pass me and gives me honks that keeps me going,” she said.

When Jazzy finishes her long run, her father said she will become the youngest female to run across the country. If you would like to follow her progress or make a donation, you can log on to her Web site by looking under the links mentioned section of this Web site.
