Highway 70 Closed For Movie Shoot

An estimated 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles use Highway 70 daily, so for a two mile stretch that’s closed due to the filming, it’s caused many headaches.

The film is called "Due Date" and it's a comedy starring actor Robert Downey Jr. with a major scene being shot in Las Cruces on Highway 70 using about 100 extras and their automobiles. As exciting as it may be for some to have a film be shot in Las Cruces, not everyone is happy about it. Especially for those who use the major highway every day.

“We were all frustrated,” said Eric Montgomery of the East Mesa. “Saw a lot of people on their cell phone, flaring their arms around, slamming their steering wheel.”

Montgomery said everyone's been telling him to leave about 30 minutes early whenever the highway is scheduled to be closed. Tuesday he left 45 minutes early to get to a meeting on University Avenue at 8 a.m.

“I was stranded basically on 70 for about, from 7:15 to 8:45 and made it to my meeting at 9 o'clock and it was over,” said Montgomery.

It's a drive that Montgomery said normally takes 15 to 20 minutes. Of course he wasn't the only one.

“I just spent about an hour earlier trying to get through,” said Richard Keding of Northeast Las Cruces. By the end of the day there were a lot of doubts about routes taken.

“I wish I would've took a different route,” said Keding.

“I've heard there's an alternate route taking Baylor Canyon down,” said Montgomery. “It's way out of the way but you have to do what you have to do.”

As for all the law enforcement being used to direct traffic, the pay for their time will come from the film production company.
