Doctor's Offices Packed With Flu Patients

Some El Paso clinics are reportedly treating nearly double the amount of patients than usual at this time of year, most with flu-like symptoms.

Barbara Bustamante brought her sick infant to two doctor's offices Thursday.

"I drove up, and the parking lot was packed," said Bustamante. "So I decided to leave and come here instead."

But at the Southwest Urgent Care Center has a steady stream of patients as well.

"The last couple of months have kept every physician's office very, very busy with flu-like symptoms," said Dr. Sergio Ibarra.

Any potential relief for doctors is two weeks away. That's when the H1N1 flu vaccine is scheduled to be widely released.

"We are accelerating this program as fast as we can without jeopardizing any of the safety steps," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. "In the mean time, keep your kids home if they are sick. Don't spread the flu to playmates and classmates."

Forty million doses of the H1N1 vaccine should be available nationwide by Oct. 15. Every week afterward, 10 to 20 million doses are expected to roll of the production line.

Some doses of a flu vaccine mist will be distributed starting this weekend, but it is geared toward caregivers and health care professionals.
