EL PASO, Texas -- Now that a large piece of land on the eastside known as the Cheryl Ladd property was cleared from medical waste and debris, area residents are wondering what's next for the property. It took years to get the resources to clean up the Cheryl Ladd property. The current city representative for that area, Eddie Holguin, promised he wanted to transform the seven acres into a park. It's been four years since the cleanup and he said he is going to keep his promise.KFOX archive video shows an eight foot pile of trash that included medical waste on the Cheryl Ladd property in 2004. What's worse is that it looked like that for more than 10 years.Armando Lujan said one of his nephews found a medical syringe inside the dump. After years of political battles, the abandoned dump was cleaned up in 2005. Since then, residents have been waiting for something other than an empty lot."That's the thing, it's been a while. It's been a while and we haven't heard anything," said Lujan.City Rep. Eddie Holguin spearheaded the cleanup project and promised this area would be transformed into a park."The problem is I didn't want to start a project and only be able to deliver 1-to 2-acre, a little parcel of park and leave the rest of it unfinished," said Holguin.Holguin said the reason it has taken so long to see a park is a decision he made. He decided to wait and place the project in a quality of life bond election because the funds to transform the 7.5 acres into a park are not available. He said the money that's available now would only allow him to build about 2 acres of a park."I think we would all liked to have seen a park built a little sooner, but it was my decision to not to developed a one to two acres parcel out there ant wait to have the entire 7.5 acres at once," said Holguin. The city of El Paso hasn't had a bond election since 2004. The next one is scheduled for next year in which Holguin will request to have the Cheryl Ladd project in so the taxpayers can vote.
